  • Remember to vote

Keep in mind that you should vote. There was a time when many people I knew said they thought their vote didn't count anyway. "I'm only one vote. What's the dif?" Well, it's a big "dif". If everyone said that, no one would vote. It is you right and your obligation. I don't care who you vote for, or who you support. But the person who goes to the White House will determine the way our future plays out. So please vote.

But I'm getting worried. I'm busy enough as it is, but now I have to stand in line for hours, maybe? Why doesn't Virginia have early voting like other sane states? Is this like the old fashion Poll Tax that prevented poor Blacks from voting back in the day? Now the working poor are forced to take half a day from work in order to vote.

I swear, if I have to wait more than a couple of hours, I'm gonna write to my congressman. I thought Tim Kaine--VA governor--was Obama's buddy? I would have thought that he'd figure out ways to increase the number of polling places and invest in new voting machines, or keep the poll places opened longer--as it is, its 6 AM to 7 PM. I go to sleep aroun 4 or 5 AM anyway; maybe I'll just stay up and be the first one to vote.

  • awww....sad little rice ball....

  • There's no absentee voting in Virginia? Or is that another name for early voting?

Anyway, I anticipate the lines... Calprig and all these other student orgs have been relentlessly registering and reminding students to vote for the past two and a half months, so I'll be surprised if there's NO line!  All I really need to do is turn in my absentee ballot (because instead of mailing it in a week ago like I should have, I was filling it out this morning at 2), so it shouldn't be too bad. But if it is, I'll just bring along the Tale of Genji and try to get a chapter done while standing in line...

    ugh, Genji...

  • Remember, remember, the fourth of November,

    When America rises to vote;

    One or the other

    Or even another

We're all in the same damn boat.

Anyway, I hate it when people say they're not going to vote as a protest against the [corrupt/inefficient/stupid] system, then complain about it. It would be nice if Election Day were a national holiday.

I was going to vote (of course), but my absentee ballot never showed up...

  • Yeah, unfortunately Early Voting isn't standard in VA. Basically, to vote early or absentee, you need to sign an affidavit (or some other form, I forget the legal term) stating that you intend on being out of the county for 11 of the 13 hours that the polls are open. You can sign it anyway, but, generally, I prefer being honest.

My suggestion if you have odd hours is to try and vote between 11am and 5pm. Those are the "off-peak" hours, since most people try to vote before or after work. Additionally, if you're in the line by 7pm, then you can still vote no matter how long the line ahead of you is.

I'm not too worried about the lines tomorrow. I'll be trying to get there really early (before 6AM) so I can avoid it. We'll see how it goes tomorrow.

And remember! There's not only the Presidential election, but also Senators, House Reps, and local or statewide resolutions on the ballot. For my county, there's 3-4 resolutions, and then of course 1 Senate and 1 House seat up for grabs. KF

  • the polls close so early in your area? my office just sent an email telling the employees to take as much time as needed to vote. i'm so excited!
