25 things
There's this list going around Facebook and I've been tagged a couple of times to do it. It's been awhile since I've done a list so I thought I'd comply. Many may already know the contents of the list below, but I will try to include new facts without being too gross.
"Once you've been tagged, you are supposed to write a note with 25 random things, facts, habits, or goals about you. At the end, choose 25 people to be tagged. You have to tag the person who tagged you. If I tagged you, it's because I want to know more about you.
(To do this, go to “notes” under tabs on your profile page, paste these instructions in the body of the note, type your 25 random things, tag 25 people, then click publish.)"
- I love dark chocolate and rarely eat milk chocolate. This is not a result of being lactose intolerant, which I am, but there is something about the bitterness of chocolate that I crave.
- I love dark leafy vegetables. This may be related to dark chocolate in that dark leafy vegetables have a tendency to be bitter as well: spinach, mustard greens, collard greens, shungiku (chrysanthemum leaves), etc.
- I feel really old these days. While some of this is physiological, a lot of it is situational. I just don't understand what my students are talking about sometimes, and it really makes me feel out of it.
- I need to write and submit at least one article during my sabbatical, if not two or three.
- If I wasn't a teacher, I'd be a cook--successful or not.
- When I retire, I plan to move to Japan.
- But I don't plan to retire for a long time so plans can change.
- I got a D+ in Modern Japanese History when I was an undergrad.
- It took me five years to graduate from a two-year community college--I was working full time most of that time, and had a lot of Ws.
- I wanted to be a professional musician but realized that the chances of an Asian American becoming a rock star were pretty slim back in the 70s. The reality, of course, is that I was never very good.
- I tell my students to stop cracking their knuckles, but I crack my own when they are not around.
- I can do an imitation of Golum. The voice, not the face.
- I am ambidextrous. I can drink beer with either my left hand or my right.
- I never cut my fingernails at night because this will bring misfortune to parents--(sub)urban myth in Japan. My parents have been gone for a few years now, but Musubichan's mother is still around.
- I can burp and fart at the same time--Just kidding. I've actually never done this, but I bet I can if I tried... Anyway, I always feel like these kinds of lists require something stupid and gross, so I feel obliged to put in at least one gross item, true or not.
- I used to be a Republican and I actually voted for Ronald Reagan. As a teenager too young to vote, I even worked briefly at the Asian Americans for Nixon campaign office in LA. I'm now an Independent. My argument, however, is that I have changed very little over the years. The country around me has shifted to the right, leaving me in the middle--fiscally conservative (basically), socially liberal (mostly).
- The scar on my right cornea is getting worse, and I think allergies exacerbate the condition. It tears up constantly and it looks like I am crying. Indeed, my right eye often looks puffy.
- I dream of having a 31 inch waist again.
- I'm not a liar, I'm a storyteller. I will embellish stories to the point that after telling the same story a hundred times, it sorta becomes the truth and I don't remember exactly what actually happened. Some might call this lying, and so be it. But I prefer storyteller. I once caught a fish THIS BIG....
- I used to be a congenital flirt. I love the opposite sex so much--much to the chagrin of Musubichan--that I couldn't help myself. I have absolutely no ulterior motive--certainly not now at my advanced age (what could I possibly do?)--but I used to love the give and take, the innuendo, and double entendre. The urge is now mostly gone, but sometimes creeps to the surface when I go drinking--it takes a bit of will power to keep my mouth zipped, my hands in my pockets and my eyes looking only at my wife or the beer in front of me. (FYI: Never at work and never with students. Duh!)
- I want a large flatscreen TV and HD satellite service.
- Everyone already knows this but I am a J-drama addict.
- I want to see my daughter in Japan.
- I love carbs but its a one-sided affair because carbs seem to hate me. Every time I eat carbs, I gain weight exponentially. If there were carb free potato chips, bread, chewy spree, or even cereal, I'd be in heaven.
- I wish I had a salary commensurate with my background, level of education and dedication to my work. I had my taxes done by H&R Block a couple of years back and the person doing my taxes expressed surprise, referring to my W2 as a "workman's salary". Indeed, I found out I make less than my plumber--granted he owns his own business...
I'm tagging the following: Dawn-109, Jerjonji, Kenshiro, Kyzer, La Mangust, Onigiri, SunJun, Takunishi, Whonose, The Greatest Pip. That's 10. The other 15 I will tag on Facebook.

Well, over a month late but I finally did that list-of-25! So many things have happened in the last month, though not all of it interesting enough to write about. Direct link is here: 25 random things.
Oh, I'm an ENTJ, by the way. Apparently that means I'm a "Field Marshall" and have some similarity with Napoleon. I'd figure myself more for a Caesar. KF
Last week, things suddenly got busy for me. I need to give a bit of thought to this, so I'm planning on getting around to this list-of-25 this weekend. KF
You? Extroverted? No!
According to the chart, that makes us "Tribesmen - share a sense of culture, but with different interests and abilities."

@LaMangust - I'm ENFP--extroverted, intuitive, feeling and preceptive... whatever that means.

Wow, you tagged me? Flattered. Since my Xanga is effectively dead and this account exists now solely for the purpose of commenting on yours, I will post my list here.
1. I am inordinately annoyed by the fact that I cannot regularly buy unsweetened green tea in the States, or green apples in Japan.
2. I obsess over my mistakes, and take little joy in my accomplishments.
3. I am bored by basketball, hate football, and adore soccer, though I chose my favorite team at random my first year in Italy.
4. I can spend an entire day listening to electronica / chillout music.
5. I only really love the United States when I’m living abroad.
6. I am certified at the highest level in Musical Theory and Practical Musicianship by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, though I’ve hardly touched a piano or other instrument since I graduated from high school.
7. I place a frightening amount of credence in daily horoscopes and tarot cards.
8. I am terrible at keeping a journal, either privately or publicly.
9. Italians believe that touching someone else’s good luck charms steals their luck. Japanese do not, but I still don’t let anyone else touch my o-mamori.
10. It is my dream to someday own many dogs, all named after my favorite prime ministers (Tony, Junichiro, Jacques, Silvio…)
11. I am terrible at team sports.
12. I have been writing a story in my head since I was twelve years old, in the time before I fall asleep at night and occasionally during meetings. If I ever wrote the whole thing down, it would be several hundred thousand words long.
13. My left eye squinches more than my right when I smile.
14. I am a grammar nazi.
15. I wish my commute were longer so I could get more reading done on the train.
16. The change in the value of the yen versus the dollar in 2008 means that I am reporting $12,000 more income to the IRS this year than last, though my salary has changed not at all.
17. My Myers-Briggs personality type is INTP (Architect).
18. I know every public library within five kilometers of my apartment.
19. I discovered too late that canceling old, useless credit cards destroys your credit score.
20. I have a form of dyslexia that makes me very unreliable when taking phone messages or dealing with large numbers, both of which my work requires on a regular basis.
21. I am lucky at neither cards nor love.
22. I find hermit crabs very relaxing.
23. I regularly recommend comic books as the best way to learn a new language, though anyone has yet to take me seriously.
24. My favorite color is green, but I very rarely wear it.
25. I have a hard time thinking of twenty-five things about myself worth putting in a list.
I'd like to hear this Gollum impression
I'll post my 25 things as a comment for now.
1. I've shaved my head twice. I was told that I looked like Justin Timberlake the first time and Gollum the second. I prefer Gollum.
2. I can bend some of my fingers and toes all the way back, and my left index finger can bend nearly 90 degrees in the wrong direction.
3. I started studying Japanese shortly after I arrived in Japan. It's been three and a half years now.
4. I was born in Washington D.C. and haven't been back since. Shortly after I was born we moved to Germany.
5. I'm wearing my wife's pink robe right now. Anyone who has ever lived in a Japanese apartment should understand why.
6. I've had a special talent for putting holes in the knees of my jeans since I was 4 or 5 years old. I kind of like the holes, but they are inconvenient in the winter.
7. I once made a copy of my friend's Xanga (using an almost identical name, copying all of his posts and profile picture) as a prank. I went around leaving weird comments on all of our other friends' sites. Everyone freaked out about it way more than I had anticipated.
8. In my first year of college I spent a good 10-15 hours per week playing pool. No one would have guessed by the way I played.
9. I think I may have ruined my Japanese friend's relationship by encouraging him to get a PS3.
10. I'm planning on taking level 1 of the JLPT this summer and enrolling in graduate school for Japanese communication in the spring of 2010. It's kind of terrifying, but the challenge is somehow appealing.
11. I can fit a 500 yen coin in my nose far too easily.
12. My wife and I have been together since high school. We knew we would get married from the start.
13. I love love love my job.
14. I get really irritated when Japanese people talk about Americans being fat, but whenever I go back to America I'm always surprised at how true it is.
15. When I was 4 or 5 years old I jumped into what I thought was a big pile of dirt. It was a very large fire ant hill.
16. I think I've watched a total of maybe 2 or three hours of football in my entire life.
17. I tried out for the cheerleading team at my college and made it. I never actually joined, though, because I ended up coming to Japan to study abroad that year. My reason for trying out was that I wanted access to the gym where the cheerleaders learned how to do flips and stuff.
18. Despite growing up in Mississippi and Kentucky, I never developed a southern accent until I attended a college in south central Kentucky.
19. I hate competing with anyone but myself. It makes me feel sick to my stomach.
20. I've had at least 7 Xangas, as well as a few other blogs with other sites. the_greatest_pip was my first, and I intend to maintain it for the rest of my life.
21. The first time I came to your Xanga I didn't even know what an onigiri was.
22. I miss Koizumi. He had great hair.
23. My family has always kept pets. We've had 2 goats, 2 rabbits, a flying squirrel, 18 ferrets, at least 10 dogs, a cat, a skunk, and several turtles. I may be leaving a few out.
24. I have too many hobbies to keep up with or get good at.
25. I was pleasantly surprised that you tagged me.
You too?
aw...
This is a guilty pleasure, reading everyone's "25 things" post.
But reading these posts just reminds me of how much you DON'T know about a person. I knew about scar on your right cornea because you've written about it and I knew about your job, but your dream to be a rock star? Getting a D+ in Modern Japanese history? Really surprising! (Though, I'm not sure I wanted to know about the farting/burping thing... ahahah.)
Anyway, it's great to see you posting! I get lonely when no one writes on xanga!
I'll fill out the 25 things soon. I've got Japanese in about two minutes.
