Distant Dad
Obviously, everyone's got my number. Yes, the answer was number 2. I would like to go see my daughter as often as possible, but that is difficult for me. Responsibilities to my immediate family compel to stay put. The only way I would go to Japan is to go as a family and, as you all know, M's passport and green card issue have yet to be resolved. Rest assured that if and when it is resolved, you guys will be among the first to find out about it. Until then, I stay at home, wishing I could see my daughter who will turn 20-years old next week. In Japan, that is the year you become an adult. I presume she went to her seijinshiki, the coming-of-age ceremony held by every local government. I hope she sends me a photo of the event, but it was in January and I have yet to hear from her.
Oh well. I guess I'm just an absentee dad. The distance feels overwhelming and sad.

Aww...don't be sad. I'm sure you're always in her heart but distance makes it difficult to keep in touch! I love my mom very much but I only call her once every two three four or five months but that doesn't mean I don't think about her. It's not that hard to pick up that phone and call either but for some reasons, I can't seem to remind myself to call her

PS. goood luck with immigration stuff. my own journey is almost ended. I'm waiting for a final stage (interview/oath) of N400

Aw, make sure you talk to her and let her understand your situation. Let her know you love her very much! Communication is the key. =)
Very difficult situation. I definitely don't think you qualify as an absentee father though. For one thing, you have the entire pacific ocean separating you from your daughter, and you not being there is based on inability, not lack of will. I think most dads that qualify for the absentee award are the ones that are unwilling to make the trip.
awwww, O-san. just reading your post made me go all awwwww and sad and i'm just a blog fan of yours, so i'm sure that if your daughter got to see this, she'd more than likely understand your predicament instead of seeing you as an absentee dad =)
wow, she's at the seijinshiki age already? As she gets older, hopefully she'll change and learn to understand how you feel.
Hmm, maybe she's just busy. Have you guys keep in touch through email too?
