  • Still exercising

I realize that I haven't been posting. I get the feeling that I just don't have that much to say these days. Is it me? Is it my life? Actually, these are essentially the same, aren't they. In any event, as I stated over a month ago--that would be exactly two posts ago--I am trying to bring my energy level back up by exercising.

I wrote previously that I have lost almost ten pounds. Well, I've stopped lifting weights as that doesn't allow me to loss the weight that quickly. I know, I know. Lifting weights to tone the body is good, but watching the numbers on the scale go down is quite motivating, so I've stopped. When I started on the health kick, I weighed a hefty 178 pounds--pretty chunky for 5'6". Yes, I'm short. They don't call me Mr. Miyagi for nothing. It was the most I had ever weighed in my life. I had reached 175 before, but that was virtually with no muscles. Not that I have a lot of muscles now, but about 15 years ago I had never worked out with weights, had done little manual labor in my life, and was a pretty sorry (read: blubbery) sight.

After working out on the treadmill last Friday, I got on the scales and was gratified to see that I had broken 160 pounds. Yes, the meter read: 159.5! Woo hoo! Of course, it was right after running for 90 minutes, and predictably I was back above 160 the next day--162 to be exact--but it felt good nonetheless.

  • congrats! stay healthy! =)

  • woo hoo! nice work.. now i'm more determined to start exercising again.

  • Actually, from what I've heard, lifting weights does help you loses weight faster... when you build muscle, the energy to use those muscles has to come from fat. The more muscles you have and use, the more fat you can burn. Pretty simplistic, but it makes sense to me... though admittedly, I'm a health dunderhead.

That having been said... I've started working out, too, sort of. I came to Japan at around 185 pounds, and I'm 5'9.5" or so -- that half an inch really matters. >.>

I gained a lot of weight for various reasons and figured I should start losing it. I've been eating less since coming to Japan, and I also bike to work every day -- it's about 25-35 minutes each way, so that's a good dose of exercise. I've also decided to ramp it out by starting a workout routine I can do every evening to build muscle. We'll see how it goes!

I just wish I had a scale to show my progress (if any). It must be a great motivator.

Good luck! I'm cheering for you over here!

  • I've been exercising too! :D ; I guess I should start a daily blog about what exercises I've done for the week too? XD Then we can be online work out buddies. I haven't weighed myself though, and probably won't be able to until I get home for Thanksgiving. Hopefully I won't have any of that "freshman 15" thing going on. D:

You haven't been posting that much! I just realized that when I read your comment. It seems like everyone else in my subscription list have stopped writing too.

  • I lost about 30 pounds after I cut down on meat and fatty foods a few years ago.  I've managed to keep it off, but I need to start lifting weights to get rid of the flabiness.  Good luck on the treadmill!

  • Good for you!

    It's actually kind of inspiring!

  • no beers for you if you come out to LA anytime soon. glad to hear you're doing well with the weight loss.
